Design Thinking is now over 20 years old. What surprises me still is that even after all this time, the untruths that continue to exist about design thinking. Even after two decades, design thinking continues to be misunderstood.

Organizations worldwide are investing heavily in Design Thinking training, tools, and processes. Teams learn the five-step method, they buy the sticky notes and whiteboards, they run the workshops. Yet many struggle to achieve the breakthrough results that research promises. The reason isn't lack of commitment or resources—it's a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Design Thinking truly effective.

Through seven years of research across 20+ industries with over 1,000 participants, I discovered that Design Thinkers aren't just people who know the process, they're individuals who possess and actively use specific capabilities. More importantly, I found that these capabilities are innate human abilities that everyone possesses, though their strength and expression vary significantly among individuals.
